First Grade

First Grade students are full of energy and ready
to read. They do phonics and at the same time read by memory. By
December they are reading on their own. They enjoy writing short simple
sentences about animals and their experiences. They also write and
illustrate their own stories, which are so much fun to read.
Adding and subtraction is confusing at the
beginning of the year but it gets real easy by the end of the year, when
they are all grown up.
Going to the Library is a real treat since they get
to take out books. Getting the parents involved in reading to their
children is one of the many benefits going to the library has.
Computer class is a favorite amongst the first
graders. They play games at their own speed and preference.
Science and Social Studies are fun classes because
they are exploring and sharing about their own environment and
experiences. They can bring pets to school, plant seeds, and explore
different shelters for animal. Discussing communities is a big topic in
first grade, since they are learning how they fit in and how they do
make a difference in their surroundings.
Above all they are learning how to make this a
better and safer place for all to live in.
