Library

The Swinford Library and Media Center is an attractive and inviting building. It is centrally located with over l0,000 volumes and  30 periodicals and newspapers.  Seven new computers were recently added to the library to insure up to date information retrieval capacity for all library patrons.  Primary grades visit the library on a scheduled weekly basis and upper grades visit as needed for research and literature of all kinds in English and Spanish.

A video viewing room with a capacity of 50 people allows classes to take advantage of the over 600 videos and DVDs in the library collection.  Students love to come to the library during recess and even lunchtime to check out books or find information to answer reference questions.  The school subscribes to EBSCO, a prescription service which gives our students access to hundreds of magazine articles, photographs and newspapers.

Primary and secondary students alike enjoy taking a book to the “Cozy Corner”, a big rug with pillows.  Children also enjoy acting out their favorite characters with the puppet theatre in this area.

The library is well staffed with a certified librarian, an assistant librarian and a part-time clerk.  Many students also enjoy volunteering with shelf reading and book shelving.  A successful special program called “Big Brothers and Sisters” matches upper class students with primary students for after school tutoring in reading and mathematics.

The library is a center for all kinds of activities and gatherings.  It meets the highest standards for American School Libraries.
