Science
The science program in grades 9-12 at Mazapan School is designed to
teach students how to use the scientific method in problem solving, to
give them experience using basic laboratory techniques, and to give them
an introduction to biology, chemistry, and physics. Students are given
an introduction to chemistry and physics in their study of physical
science in ninth grade, and then they go on to study biology in tenth
grade, chemistry in eleventh grade, and physics in twelfth grade. All
classes meet five days a week with a double period on one of those days,
used for laboratory investigations, for a total of six periods per
week. A high school science fair is held every two years, and students
are obliged to participate. Therefore, all students participate in the
science fair at least twice in their high school careers.
Mazapan School’s laboratory was recently remodeled
and is equipped with fifteen stations where students work in pairs to
carry out a variety of investigations in any of the three major subject
areas. Each station is equipped with gas, water, a compound light
microscope, and all the equipment necessary to carry out a basic lab
investigation. In addition, the laboratory is equipped with an
incubating oven, an autoclave, a water distillation unit, a video
microscope, and a TV with VHS.
