Middle School

Our middle school program focuses upon developing skills of independence, responsibility, intrinsic motivation, and passion for depth and mastery of learning.  During these transitional, formative years, our teachers focus on supporting student needs socially and emotionally as well as academically.  The strong foundation established during the elementary years is extended and built upon, encouraging curiosity, questioning, and exploration of concepts and ideas.  Beginning in 5th grade, classes are taught by teachers that specialize in each of the subject areas and students deepen their technical knowledge and skills in each subject. Emphasis is placed upon further development and application of vocabulary through classroom discussions, writing, project based learning, investigations, and technology use.

Our middle school division focuses on fostering a love of learning through engaging, fun, challenging and goal oriented lessons. Our curriculum is adapted to our school needs and follows the Common Core State Standards for Math and Language Arts, the Next Generation Science Standards, the Virginia Social Studies Standards, and the Honduran Ministry of Education.

The school utilizes the approach to lesson planning based on Dr. Jane E. Pollock’s research that focuses on establishing specific learning goals for each lesson.  Our middle school curriculum prioritizes the expansion of creative and critical thinking skills, encouraging inquiry, questioning, connections and problem solving.

Students are encouraged to question the world around them, and collaborate in using their knowledge and skills to solve problems.
